The skin needs high concentrations of vitamin C to stimulate collagen and maintain antioxidant protection against UV rays. Given that the body doesn’t do this alone, the nutritional supply of vitamins to the epidermis must be boosted.
The epidermis is the outermost layer of skin and it lacks blood vessels that transport substances ingested orally, meaning vitamin C must be added topically. There’s also another difficulty: the stratum corneum, which is the last layer of the epidermis, functions as a barrier that prevents the passage of many substances, especially those that are highly soluble and unstable like vitamin C.
