Each of us has a specific skin tone (skin phototype). This difference in tone is due to the concentration of a natural pigment in the skin called melanin. But what is melanin? Melanin is a pigment produced by our body that dictates the tone of our hair, eyes and skin. At the skin level, its main function is to protect the skin from the sun. The type and amount of melanin produced by our body will determine both our skin tone and its level of protection against UV radiation.
Melanin is produced by melanocytes, cells found in the deepest layer of the epidermis. Melanocytes insert melanin granules into the cells that surround them (keratinocytes), giving us our skin tone.
When there are variations in the melanic pigment, either by excess or by defect, alterations of the colour of the skin take place known as dyschromias or hyper or hypomelanosis.
There are several reasons why hyperpigmentation can occur, as well as many types of pigmentation. Tyrosinase, a key enzyme in melanin production, is involved in all of them.
Depigmen P3 acts in different steps of the hyperpigmentation process. At the production stage, it inhibits tyrosinase, reducing the amount of melanin it generates. It also provides an anti-inflammatory action, limiting the skin’s immune response and improving its tolerance to other active ingredients. Finally, it works by lightening existing dark spots by activating cell renewal.

ACTIVE INGREDIENTS
Polypodium leucotomos is a powerful natural active ingredient that’s native to Central America with incredible antioxidant and photo-protective properties that protect the skin from the effects of UV radiation. It also has anti-inflammatory and immunostimulatory functions. It regulates the dermal structure, which stabilises melanocytes, among other actions. On top of that, it enhances the brightening effects of other active ingredients. This active ingredient is extracted using an original Asacpharma procedure that preserves the integrity of its components.
Liquorice extract is a natural depigmenting agent that has been proven to inhibit tyrosinase activity. It also has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. This active ingredient is widely used in depigmenting treatments due to its powerful lightening action.
Arbutin is a derivative of hydroquinone (a well-known depigmenting prescription-only treatment used in dermatology) that works as a tyrosinase inhibitor, reducing its activity by blocking the biosynthesis of epidermal melanin by inhibiting its enzymatic oxidation as well as blocking dihydroxyphenylanaline oxidation.
Retinol is one of the best-known active ingredients in cosmetics for its potent anti-ageing properties, but it’s also an excellent exfoliant, stimulating cell regeneration, interferes in melanosome transfer, increases keratinocyte renewal and inhibits tyrosinase transcription. It’s often used to treat melisma due to its effectiveness.
Kojic acid is an active ingredient widely used to treat skin conditions such as sun damage, scars and blemishes, among others. It’s a powerful skin brightener and a very common skin care ingredient. It also collaborates in tyrosinase inhibition.
Vitamin C is a well-known and powerful antioxidant that accelerates epidermal renewal. It also helps reduce melanin production, interacting with copper in the in situ activation of tyrosinase.
FORMULATION
We’re really proud of Depigmen P3’s formulation, firstly because it’s formulated with the Kligman Triad. This well-known combination of active ingredients is highly effective in treating skin pigmentation. It has a triple-lightening effect that intervenes in the numerous factors that cause hyperpigmentation, brightening and evening out the skin tone. It inhibits tyrosinase action, reducing the amount of melanin it produces and therefore preventing the reappearance of hyperpigmentation. It has an anti-inflammatory action, ensuring that the skin won’t react to the applied medicine and form a scar, giving rise to new dark spots. It also has a keratolytic effect that activates cell regeneration, which accelerates the shedding of pigmented cells.
Secondly, all the products in the line contain fortifying active ingredients that enhance the main formulation’s action, such as Vitamin A and Emulium mellifera.
Thirdly, the Depigmen P3 line includes brightening and antioxidant active ingredients in liposomes. Liposomes make the active ingredients more stable, and they also allow the ingredients to penetrate deeper into the skin and be more easily absorbed.
